Hometown spoken word and hip-hop artist One night only – Live Band

“Yes No Maybe” by: Ise Lyfe

One of the nation’s greatest young performers and writers performing live at the legendary Yoshi’s Jazz Club. Paying homage and adding his twist to the classic and powerful music of Fela Kuti, Nina Simone, Gil Scott Heron, Tupac Shakur, and Billie Holiday.

“Essentially, these five artist best represent the core of my artistic inspiration and embody a standard of both content and    skill that I am always aspiring for. I’m excited to be performing back in myhometown at such a great venue to honor these giants.”
Ise Lyfe

Recently appointed Commissioner of Arts and Cultural Affairs in his hometown of Oakland, CA, Ise Lyfe is one of the nation’s premier Spoken Word Artist and Emcee’s. His 2006 debut album, ”spreadtheWord” allowed him to mettle with a national audience, and the release of his second LP, “Prince Cometh” received rave reviews from critics and fans alike. Unaffected by the sophomore jinx theory, it’s safe to say the response across the board was nearly 100% positive…

Ise first gained national recognition competing in national poetry slam competitions in his late teens. In 2001 he won the National Poetry Slam Competition, skyrocketing his popularity amongst the ever growing Spoken Word/Hip-Hop Theatre audience.  He has been featured on Russell Simmons’ Def Poetry Jam on HBO. He has also shared the stage with Gil Scott-Heron, Dave Chappelle, Lauryn Hill, Talib Kweli, Dead Prez, E-40, Harry Belafonte, Mos Def, Malcolm Jamaal Werner, KRS-One, Martin Luther, Saul Williams, Ben Harper, Erykah Badu, Zion I, and The Coup to name a few.

However, Ise Lyfe is simply different than anyone else in his genre or league of peers. Period.

Just in his twenties with nearly ten years of national and international stage performing and recording experience, he transcends the common narrative on and off stage. An award winning poet, emcee, performer, and educator, this young man is sure to be the impact we all speak of wanting, but rarely see realized….

Five-time GRAMMY-nominated composer and pianist Omar Sosa returns to Yoshi’s Oakland with his regular rhythm section of Childo Tomas from Mozambique on electric bass, and Marque Gilmore, now from Stockholm, on drums and electronics, plus special guest saxophone and flute player from Cuba, Leandro Saint-Hill.  Leandro was part of the groundbreaking recording sessions at the Blue Note Jazz Club in New York City in 2008 that resulted in two GRAMMY nominations for Omar’s genre-bending CD release, Across The Divide.

At Yoshi’s Oakland, Omar will be featuring new material from his current recording-in-progress, entitled Afri-Lectric.  This CD project is loosely inspired by the music of Miles Davis’ Kind Of Blue recording, and evolved from a commission Omar received from the Barcelona Jazz Festival to prepare a tribute to the famous CD on the occasion of its 50th anniversary.

Leela JamesLeela

Soulful Female Vocalist

Oct 28-Oct 29, 2011

Saturday: 10pm

YOSHI’S SAN FRANCISCO

Yoshi’s San Francisco
1330 Fillmore Street
San Francisco, CA 94115

Since her childhood in L.A.’s eclectic urban culture, singer Leela James has woven the soul tradition into and around every corner of her creative identity. Deep within her rich and powerful voice are the echoes of Aretha Franklin, Mavis Staples, Gladys Knight and other iconic divas of generations past.

And yet, James’ brand of soul is very much her own – a music inspired by past masters but galvanized by her own life experience and highly focused artistic vision. She brings it all home to the place where modern soul was born, Stax Records (a division of Concord Music Group) with the release of her new album, My Soul, on June 1, 2010.

“I called this album My Soul because the music is a more accurate reflection of who I am than anything else I’ve ever recorded,” says James. “I did more of the writing, and I was involved with more of the creative process in general. When you listen to the individual tracks, one song may not necessarily sound like the other, but each is soulful in its own way, because each one comes from my soul. I’m the thread that connects all the songs.” Following on the heels of an album of covers released in 2009, My Soul is a current portrait of an artist who has matured over the past decade, found her own voice and made her own way. “After my first two records, I knew I had to find a way to have more control over what was happening with my career,” says James. “When I was younger, I was just excited to be making records, and I wasn’t aware of some of the fine print that’s a part of this business. I had to learn how to take charge of where my music was going, and how to get there.”

She made her recording debut with A Change Is Gonna Come, released on the Warner label in 2005. The album title alone – taken from the title of a 1964 posthumous hit by Sam Cooke and an anthem for the civil rights movement – speaks to James’ deep-rooted belief in the soul tradition and its ever-present potential to influence history. In the midst of a change in management and label over the next four years, James kept busy with an aggressive tour schedule that introduced her to festival audiences in the Netherlands, Switzerland, South Africa and elsewhere around the world. Along the way, she was nominated for 2006’s Outstanding New Artist by the NAACP Image Awards and Best R&B/Soul or Rap New Artist of 2008 by the Soul Train Music Awards.

In 2009, she recorded Let’s Do It Again for the Shanachie label. The album was a series of covers – mostly soul, R&B and funk tunes by the likes of Bootsy Collins, The Staples Singers, Al Green, James Brown and Bobby Womack. Also in the mix were songs originally recorded by lesser known artists like Betty Wright and Phyllis Hyman. Let’s Do It Again prompted readers of soultracks.com – the respected website for all things soul, R&B and gospel – to tap James as Female Vocalist of the Year in the site’s 2009 Readers Choice Poll in December 2009.

The first single off the album, “Tell Me You Love Me,” is a track that James co-wrote with Andrea Martin and Gordon Williams. Gerrard Baker loops in a sample of James riffing on a line from “Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye,” the classic ballad made popular among soul audiences by the Manhattans in 1978. “The title says it all,” says James. “A lot times, people – especially men – let their egos and their pride stop them from really expressing their feelings. Even when a woman knows her man loves her, she still needs to hear him say it.” Other high points include the defiant opening track “Ain’t New To This,” wherein James stakes her claim as an artist to be reckoned with, balanced by the more light-hearted “Party All Night” and “Let It Roll.” The latter, says James, was inspired by the optimistic sound from the heyday of Motown in the 1960s: “The message in this song is ‘Don’t sweat the small stuff.’ You have to just keep your head when you’re faced with difficult situations and difficult people, no matter how bad the energy might get.”

Clearly, Leela James’s musical soul embraces an infinite range of emotions and human struggles. As an artist and as a person, making tough choices and doing the right thing – even if it’s the hard thing – is what she’s been all about for more than a decade. In the process, she has never lost sight of the core values of the soul tradition – passion, perseverance and a strong sense of identity. All of these and more are at the foundation of My Soul.

“In the past, people tried to put me in a box, based on what they thought soul should sound like,” she says. “But soul is whatever comes out of you when you bring your deepest and most honest emotions to the forefront. All these songs are a representation of my soul.”

Average White Band – Pick Up The Pieces
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MfAJLGFWxYo

AWB are widely regarded as one of the best soul and funk bands in the history of music. Though perhaps best known for their timeless instrumental mega-hit ‘Pick Up the Pieces’  the band’s strength actually lay in their consistently accomplished song-  writing, stretching across several gold selling albums and multi- grammy  nominations for the legendary Atlantic Records. Somewhat incongruously, given their Scottish roots, the six piece took the influences of their R&B heroes – people like Marvin Gaye, James Brown, Donny Hathaway and others – and developed their own ‘authentic’ sound which was eagerly adopted by black audiences in the US and elsewhere. Whilst a good number of cuts – ‘Cut The Cake’ and ‘Let’s Go Round Again’ to name but two – attracted chart action as hit singles, many other album tracks, like ‘Schoolboy Crush’ and ‘Stop The Rain’  became much sampled and turn tabled ‘rare’ grooves. Many more tunes, such as ‘Cloudy’, ‘A Love Of Your Own’ and ‘Nothing You Can Do’ – amongst many others- stand alongside some of the finest soul ‘album tracks’ ever recorded.

The current line-up of the band with noted US recruits Klyde Jones and Rocky Bryant augmenting founder members Alan Gorrie and Onnie McIntyre continues to record and tour around the world to ongoing critical and audience acclaim.

As one reviewer in England last month wrote, “their storming set cemented the fact that veterans or not, AWB remain the unchallenged kings of UK Funk.”

All this and more is perfectly illustrated in the band’s latest release ‘Times Squared’ which showcases the breadth and depth of the Band’s material, all captured within the excitement of a 2009 live performance’

George Marsh: drums/percussion

For nearly half a century, mandolinist / composer / bandleader / producer David Grisman has been a guiding force in the evolving world of acoustic music. His musical range is wide and deep — embracing many styles, genres and traditions.

An acoustic pioneer and innovator, David forged a unique personal artistic path, skillfully combining elements of the great American music/art forms — jazz and bluegrass with many international flavors and sensibilities to create his own distinctive idiom — “Dawg” music (the nickname given him by Jerry Garcia.)  In doing so, he’s inspired new generations of acoustic string musicians, while creating his own niche in contemporary music.

Grisman discovered the mandolin as a teenager growing up in New Jersey, where he met and became a disciple of mandolinist/folklorist Ralph Rinzler. Despite warnings from his piano teacher that it wasn’t a “real” instrument, David learned to play the mandolin in the style of Bill Monroe, the father of bluegrass music.  He took it to Greenwich Village where he studied English at NYU, while immersed in the proliferating folk music scene of the early 1960s.

In 1963 Grisman made his first recordings both as an artist (Even Dozen Jug Band – Elektra) and producer (Red Allen, Frank Wakefield and the Kentuckians – Folkways.)  In 1966 Red Allen offered David his first job with an authentic bluegrass band, the Kentuckians. Grisman began composing original tunes and playing with other urban bluegrass contemporaries like Peter Rowan and Jerry Garcia, with whom he would later form Old & in the Way.

David’s interests spread to jazz in 1967, while playing in a folk-rock group, Earth Opera. A failed attempt at learning to play alto sax turned him into a student of jazz musicianship and theory. His burgeoning career as a session musician gave him experience playing many types of music and opportunities to stretch the boundaries of the mandolin. His discography is filled with notables including Jerry Garcia, Stephane Grappelli, the Grateful Dead, John Hartford, Del McCoury, Bonnie Raitt, Linda Ronstadt, Earl Scruggs, James Taylor and Doc Watson.

Dawg’s instrumental style found a home in 1974 when he formed the Great American Music Band with fiddler Richard Greene. “Nothing against singers,” said David, “but it became apparent to me that I could play 90 minutes without one. Besides, Elvis never called.” Within a year, David met guitar wizard Tony Rice, who moved to California where they started rehearsing a new group, the David Grisman Quintet (DGQ,) which also included violinist Darol Anger and bassist/mandolinist Todd Phillips. Since then the DGQ has featured such stellar notables as Svend Asmussen, Hal Blaine, Vassar Clements, Stephane Grappelli, Mike Marshall, Andy Statman and Frank Vignola.

The current lineup of the DAVID GRISMAN QUINTET  includes bassist Jim Kerwin, flutist Matt Eakle, percussionist George Marsh, and guitarist Frank Vignola.

After recording for major and independent labels, David founded Acoustic Disc in 1990 and entered the most prolific period of his career, producing 67 critically acclaimed CDs (five of which were Grammy-nominated.) In 2010 he launched <http://AcousticOasis.com/>AcousticOasis.com, the first download website devoted to acoustic music.

David Grisman has always been a revolutionary. He has deeply influenced contemporary acoustic practicioners through his own musical explorations and with the continuing success of Acoustic Disc and Acoustic Oasis, has helped make artist-owned independent labels a viable force in today’s music business.

San Francisco, CA 94115

A Fundraiser for Before Columbus Foundation
Poet. Playwright. Activist.
Featuring performances by Al Young, Genny Lim, Lorna Dee Cervantes and Danny Romero.

Amiri Baraka
Amiri Baraka, born in 1934, in Newark, New Jersey, USA, is the author of over 40 books of essays, poems, drama, and music history and criticism, a poet icon and revolutionary political activist who has recited poetry and lectured on cultural and political issues extensively in the USA, the Caribbean, Africa, and Europe.

With influences on his work ranging from musical orishas such as Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane, Thelonius Monk, and Sun Ra to the Cuban Revolution, Malcolm X and world revolutionary movements, Baraka is renowned as the founder of the Black Arts Movement in Harlem in the 1960s that became, though short-lived, the virtual blueprint for a new American theater aesthetics. The movement and his published and performance work, such as the signature study on African-American music, Blues People (1963) and the play Dutchman (1963) practically seeded “the cultural corollary to black nationalism” of that revolutionary American milieu.

Other titles range from Selected Poetry of Amiri Baraka/LeRoi Jones (1979), to The Music (1987), a fascinating collection of poems and monographs on Jazz and Blues authored by Baraka and his wife and poet Amina, and his boldly sortied essays, The Essence of Reparations (2003).

He has been the subject of numerous documentary films including Mario Van Peeble’s Poetic License for The Sundance Channel and St. Clair Bourne’s In Motion: Amiri Baraka. He has also appeared in dozens of films including, most recently, M.K. Asante, Jr’s award-winning documentary The Black Candle.

The Essence of Reparations is Baraka’s first published collection of essays in book form radically exploring what is sure to become a twenty-first century watershed movement of Black peoples to the interrelated issues of racism, national oppression, colonialism, neo-colonialism, self-determination and national and human liberation, which he has long been addressing creatively and critically. It has been said that Amiri Baraka is committed to social justice like no other American writer. He has taught at Yale, Columbia, and the State University of New York at Stony Brook.

Somebody Blew Up America & Other Poems is Baraka’s first collection of poems published in the Caribbean and includes the title poem that has headlined him in the media in ways rare to poets and authors. The recital of the poem “that mattered” engaged the poet warrior in a battle royal with the very governor of New Jersey and with a legion of detractors demanding his resignation as the state’s Poet Laureate because of Somebody Blew Up America’s provocatively poetic inquiry (in a few lines of the poem) about who knew beforehand about the New York City World Trade Center bombings in 2001. The poem’s own detonation caused the author’s photo and words to be splashed across the pages of New York’s Amsterdam News and the New York Times and to be featured on CNN–to name a few US city, state and national and international media.

Ishmael Reed
Ishmael Reed is one of the most original and controversial figures in the field of African American letters. Reed was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, on 22 February 1938, but he grew up in Buffalo, New York. After graduating from high school in 1956, he enrolled as a night student at Millard Fillmore College but transferred to the University of Buffalo as a day student with the assistance of an English teacher who was impressed with a story Reed had written. For financial reasons, however, Reed eventually withdrew without taking a degree. He remained in Buffalo for some time, working as a correspondent for the Empire Star Weekly, a black community newspaper, and serving as cohost of a local radio program that was canceled after Reed conducted an interview with Malcolm X.

Moving to New York City in 1962, Reed served as editor of a Newark, New Jersey, weekly and helped establish the legendary East Village Other, one of the first and best-known of the so-called underground newspapers. Reed also was a member of the Umbra Writers Workshop, one of the organizations instrumental in the creation of the Black Arts movement and its efforts to establish a Black Aesthetic.

Reed’s first novel, The Freelance Pallbearers, was published in 1967. That same year he moved to Berkeley, California, later relocating to the adjacent city of Oakland, where he currently resides with his wife, Carla Blank, a dancer and choreographer. They have a daughter, Tennessee. Reed also has a daughter, Timothy Brett, from a previous marriage.

Reed has taught at the University of California at Berkeley since the late 1960s, even though he was denied tenure in 1977 (a circumstance he wrote about in his first collection of essays, Shrovetide in Old New Orleans (1978). He also has held visiting appointments at many other academic institutions, including Yale, Harvard, Dartmouth, Washington University in St. Louis, and SUNY Buffalo. In addition to winning several awards for his writing, Reed has been nominated for the Pulitzer Prize and was twice a finalist for the National Book Award (once in poetry and once in fiction).

Roscoe Mitchell
Through his participation in the establishment of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) and as a founding member of the world-renowned Art Ensemble of Chicago, Roscoe Mitchell, composer and multi-instrumentalist was a major contributor to the creation of the body of musical literature that ushered in the post-Coltrane period. Mr. Mitchell has received numerous awards and grants including the National Endowment for the Arts, Wisconsin Arts Board, Vilas Foundation, University of Wisconsin-Madison and a research grant from Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique Musique (IRCAM) in Paris, France. He founded the Creative Arts Collective (CAC) of East Lansing, Michigan and he is the founder/leader of the Sound Ensemble and a co-founder of the trio Space.

Roscoe Mitchell’s innovations as a solo performer, his role in the resurrection of long-neglected woodwind instruments of extreme register, and his reassertion of the composer into what has traditionally been an improvisational form, have placed him at the forefront of contemporary music for over twenty years.

TANK

Tank – Emergency
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5xne4rHjL0k

Tank is one of the most recognizable names in modern R&B, known for vivid storytelling and sensual love songs. He’s an icon in the making, with four albums and eight Grammy nominations under his belt. He’s also a singer who carries the torch of masters like Marvin Gaye and Al Green, while redefining R&B for a new decade. For singer/songwriter/producer Tank—about to release his Atlantic Records debut Now or Never, his first album in three years, and the one he describes as his most confident yet—the secret is simple. He remains true to who he is, as a man and an artist.

“My music is the real me,” says Tank. “I’ll either live by that or I’ll die by that in this business, but I’ve got to be me.” He’s famous for sexy yet relatable love songs that are at once thoroughly modern and yet steeped in the sounds of classic soul. Though fans know and love Tank for smash hits like “Maybe I Deserve” and “Please Don’t Go,” they may be surprised to learn that he is also behind such chart-toppers as Rubben Studdard’s “Change Me” and Omarion’s “O.” What’s more, Tank served as an associate member of the hit-making production team, The Underdogs, with further credits including the smash soundtrack to the 2006 musical film adaptation of Dreamgirls (in which he also made a cameo). Since releasing his previous album Sex, Love, & Pain in 2007, Tank took a moment to step out of the spotlight, but not necessarily out of the studio. He formed the Los Angeles-based production company Song Dynasty, and began shaping the sound of modern R&B with songs for a diverse roster of artists including Keyshia Cole, Jennifer Hudson, Jamie Foxx, Chris Brown, and Keri Hilson. Though he has enjoyed crafting hits for these artists, Tank is ready to step into the spotlight yet again, and returns with an incredibly personal collection. “I put a lot of my personal business into my music because people relate to it. I sing based upon the things that I’ve been through. I don’t just sing about the pain, I sing about getting through it. Whether I’m singing about sex, relationships, or the occasional party, the songs are still about classic R&B themes.”

Poised to release his fourth studio album Now or Never, Tank is ready to share the intensely intimate themes his fans have come to love, even as he prepares to show an entirely new side of himself. “The sound of this new album is still the traditional R&B formula, but sonically it’s very current,” says Tank. His first single, “Sex Music,” perfectly illustrates his new sound. The high-energy track lives up to its name with a spacey, shuddering beat. Produced by Song Dynasty with Harvey Mason Jr. (Dreamgirls, Kelly Clarkson, Justin Timberlake), “Sex Music” is sure to appeal to die-hard Tank fans.

“We’re going to keep pressing forward with this R&B thing,” promises Tank. During the process of bringing Now or Never to life, he’s experimented with new technology and new collaborators, even as he explores the themes that have always moved him. “Emergency” is an emotional ballad with a sense of humor, comparing a woman’s desire to a four-alarm fire. “You Mean that Much” is a soaring, orchestral anthem. “Can I Make Love”, says Tank, “is self-explanatory… I’m known for having songs that give you an opportunity to not say much. All you need is a little eye contact, and it’s on.”

These timeless songs of love, lust, and loss take cinematic tone in the hands of Tank, as he crafts imagery that is uniquely tangible and real. Perhaps it’s his new love of acting that has deepened his storytelling. Tank recently graced the screen in The Preacher’s Kid, and he has been studying acting, though he promises that music will continue to be his first love. “We have to take this stand now because R&B is slowly becoming a lost art,” explains Tank. “R&B music is the thing that connects people.” Though he loves a fantasy party scene as much as any man, Tank writes about the real, everyday emotions and situations that people relate to because, as he says, “we’re meant to move people with this music, and I want to be part of that movement.”

It’s been an incredible journey since Tank was an undiscovered artist with a dream, penning “Maybe I Deserve” in the basement of his mother’s Maryland home, on “an MPC and two keyboards.” The single would go on to dominate urban radio in 2001, when Tank released his gold-certified debut album Force of Nature. Though he has enjoyed remarkable successes throughout his career, Tank considers Now or Never the album when “it all came together.” The title doesn’t just refer to the urgency he feels within R&B as a whole, but also the growth he’s done over the years as an artist. Now re-emerging with a new team and a renewed confidence in his music, Tank is ready to have these songs heard.

“Everything I’ve been through has prepared me for this moment right now. I’ve got a new deal, new energy and new people around who are just as excited about the album as I am. Everything I’ve learned over the years as a producer, writer and artist have gone into Now or Never.”

Fela

November 15, 2011 -December 11, 2011
8:00PM

Curran Theatre
445 Geary St
San Francisco, CA 94102

Fela! is presented by Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, the first time they’ve produced a Broadway show. Fela! was created by Bill T. Jones. Jones choreographed, wrote the play book for, and directed Fela! Jones created his own dance company, has won a MacArthur Genius Award, a Harlem Renaissance Award, an Obie, and a Tony, among many other honors.

Fela! documents the incredible true story of Fela Kuti, a musician from Nigeria who pioneered Afro beat music, and who fought for civil rights and against political corruption in his native country.

Fela was initially going to be a doctor, but decided to be a musician instead, fusing many different styles and the sounds of his native country into what eventually became known as his own distinct and complex style of music, Afrobeat.

The Political Struggles of Fela

Fela first started calling his music Afrobeat in the late sixties, and as his career progressed, his music got more political, much to the chagrin of the Nigerian government, who attacked the commune where Fela lived, destroying his studio, and beating him badly (Fela’s mother was killed during the attack).

But this didn’t quiet Fela or his music, which continued to infuriate the government. Fela also tried to run for President in Nigeria’s first elections in over ten years. When Fela died in 1997, over a million people came to the funeral chanting “Fela will live forever,” and a shrine was built in his honor.

It has been said that hip-hop would not exist without Fela’s music, and he was also described as a combination of James Brown, Muhammad Ali, and Bob Dylan. Eventually Fela’s music was re-released, and several musical shows showcasing his story and life hit the stage (recently a movie from Focus Features about the life of Fela was made for release in 2010).

Fela! was first performed off-Broadway in 2008, and it was a huge success, hitting Broadway the following year, with the help of Will and Jada Pinkett-Smith, Jay-Z, and several other producers. The music of Fela has also been provided by Antibalas, a modern nine-piece afrobeat band. Fela! of course also features the incredible legacy of music he left behind, and his musical and political legacy still live on strong.

The Triumph of Fela

The musical Fela! is an incredible explosion of music, color and culture. The website www.felaonbroadway.com notes, “Please be advised that Fela! has loud sound effects, smoke and haze effects and strobe effects. “The Broadway experience can be like sitting with blinders on,” the creator of Fela! told Billboard. “This is a show you enjoy as much with your body as with your mind. It’s free and communal.”

Fela! is presented by Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, the first time they’ve produced a Broadway show. Fela! was created by Bill T. Jones. Jones choreographed, wrote the play book for, and directed Fela! Jones created his own dance company, has won a MacArthur Genius Award, a Harlem Renaissance Award, an Obie, and a Tony, among many other honors.

Fela! has been nominated for 11 Tony Awards, and has won three: Best Choreography, Best Costume Design for a Musical, and Best Sound Design for a Musical.

BRANFORD MARSALIS

An evening with one of the most innovative and forward-thinking jazz ensembles today

YOSHI’S SAN FRANCISCO . SEPTEMBER 21 – 25

Yoshi’s San Francisco
1330 Fillmore Street
San Francisco, CA 94115

Wednesday 8pm

Thursday – Saturday  8pm & 10pm

Sunday 7pm & 9pm

Branford Marsalis

NEA Jazz Master, renowned Grammy Award®-winning saxophonist and Tony Award® nominee composer Branford Marsalis is one of the most revered instrumentalists of his time. The three-time Grammy Award® winner has continued to exercise and expand his skills as an instrumentalist, a composer, and the head of Marsalis Music, the label he founded in 2002 that has allowed him to produce both his own projects and those of the jazz world’s most promising new and established artists.

Marsalis made his Broadway debut as the composer of original music for the Tony Award® winning Broadway revival of August Wilson’s play “Fences”. Marsalis received a Tony nomination in the category of “Best Original Score (Music and/or Lyrics) Written for the Theatre” and a 2010 Drama Desk Award® for “Outstanding Music in a Play” for his participation.

Leader of one of the finest jazz Quartets today, and a frequent soloist with classical ensembles, Branford has become increasingly sought after as a featured soloist with such acclaimed orchestras as the Chicago, Detroit, Düsseldorf, and North Carolina Symphonies and the Boston Pops, with a growing repertoire that includes compositions by Copland, Debussy, Glazunov, Ibert, Mahler, Milhaud, Rorem and Vaughn Williams. His propensity for innovative and forward-thinking compels him to seek new and challenging works by modern classical composers such as modern Scottish composer Sally Beamish who, after hearing Branford perform her composition “The Imagined Sound of Sun on Stone” at the 2006 North Sea Jazz Festival, was inspired to re-conceive a piece in progress, “Under the Wing of the Rock,” which he premiered as part of the Celtic Connections festival Beamish’s home country of Scotland in January 2009.

Making his first appearance with the New York Philharmonic in the summer of 2010, Marsalis was again invited to join them as soloist in their 2010-2011 concert series where he unequivocally demonstrated his versatility and prowess, bringing “a gracious poise and supple tone… and an insouciant swagger” (New York Times) to the repertoire.

In 2011, the National Endowment for the Arts conferred the prestigious Jazz Masters Fellowship on the Marsalis Family, a celebration and acknowledgement of a family described by the New York Times as “jazz’s most storied living dynasty”, who have made an indelible mark, collectively and individually, on the history and the future of jazz, America’s art form.

Songs of Mirth and Melancholy

On Songs, the mutual admiration between Marsalis and Calderazzo is expressed through music that is the result of close listening, cooperation, and continuous adjustment to one another’s musical ideas. Branford says,“The duo is more like classical chamber music. You have to listen to each other or it doesn’t work.” Joey adds that they challenge each other to step up their playing; “I put myself out there now, painting myself into corners to see if I can figure out the puzzle.” The musicians both treat the duo performance as an opportunity for something completely unique from their performances together in the Branford Marsalis Quartet.“… the object is not to play in the same way that you play in other situations. You have to change the conversation as well as the setting. Once you know the form, you can just react to each other, which you can’t do when a group gets larger.”

Songs includes three original compositions from Marsalis, four from Calderazzo, a cover of a Wayne Shorter’s “Face on the Barroom Floor,” and Brahms’s “Die Trauernde,” which Marsalis identifies as “the inspiration for how we approach everything as a duo.” Marsalis and Calderazzo recorded Songsclose to home at Durham, North Carolina’s Hayti Center. Marsalis describes the room as having qualities that “studios and concert halls pay millions to achieve. The sound is incredibly intimate, and very naked.”

The same could be said of the sounds that Branford Marsalis and Joey Calderazzo have brought forth on Songs of Mirth and Melancholy. Neighbors, golf buddies, teaching colleagues, longtime band members and friends, Marsalis and Calderazzo share with their listeners a passionate and profound duo collection.

Whether on the stage, in the recording studio, in the classroom or in the community, Branford Marsalis embodies a commitment to musical excellence and a determination to keep music at the forefront.

R&B vocalist returns!

Few young singers from the nascent” new school” of conscious soul possess the grace, maturity, strength and determination of amel larrieux, whose epic solo debut infinite possibilities places her in a musical niche all her own.

Drawing on a wealth of influences from jazz, hip-hop, gospel and funky r&b, and with flashes of middle eastern, west african and indian ethnic styles, amel has crafted a veritable concept album that explores an endless range of promise and potential…lyrically, musically and personally. reflecting the title she chose, infinite possibilities symbolizes a challenge, not only to herself but to the self-limiting and thus incomplete definition of what is commercially identified as black music and art today.

“I’m not worried about labels,” amel says when asked about the term “progressive r&b,” which has been applied to many of today’s artists. “some folks need them for clarity. but the definition of ‘black music’ should be looked at. if everyone knew how many kinds of music could technically fall under this category, its use would be more justifiable. but most people just don’t know.”

“What’s really disturbing is that many artists are making forms of black music blues, rock & roll, jazz, soul, but for some reason their music is not categorized as ‘black music.’ so i wonder, does your skin color determine what category you’re in? in the end, it doesn’t really matter what anyone calls it. label it, that’s fine–i just keep makin’ ‘amel’s music.'” Watch her video “For Real” on YouTube here.

“Z-Trip is the original Girltalk; only better. The best (DJ) show ever” Spin Magazine

Z-Trip is not just a DJ. He is more than a producer. He is a musical pioneer. And sits at the helm of the highest echelon of DJ royalty. As a performer, Z-Trip is revered as one of the best live performance DJs in history, by both fans and peers. Its no surprise fans voted him Americas Best D in 2009, beating out over 100 other DJs in DJ Times highly acclaimed annual readers poll. His worldwide sold out shows continue to set attendance records while drawing critical praise. One of the great musical moments from Coachella (2002) was the frenzied set by turntable wizard Z-Trip. He had fans howling and bobbing, closing his set with a surprise appearance by Beck, wrote the Los Angles Times. Its a fact that many call him the godfather of mash-ups, as he is one of the originators of the genre.

His lengthy career has seen him crisscross the globe numerous times, chalking up rave reviews along the way. He returned to Coachella 2010, for his fourth appearance at the festival headlining the Sahara Tent, where the OC Register noted: Even against two of the biggest draws on the schedule, Z-Trip raked em in, filling the Sahara with over 15,000 revelers. His 2009 Detroit Electronic Music Festival performance to over 10,000 stole the festival receiving the lions share of press: “Z-Trip lit up Saturday night, first by jamming with RJD2 then following with a Detroit-saluting mash-up set, beamed Billboard.

At the vanguard of dance music culture, he is at the heart of the DJ Hero video game series. Appearing as an avatar and providing several scorching remixes, Z-Trips relentless vision even defied the advanced technology. An 8-bar scratch that he wanted to incorporate into the game was too much for the games memory to handle. Beyond being immortalized as a playable character and his contribution of three exclusive tracks to the first installment, he remained a consultant, as well as executive producer, for DJ Hero 2 and created an additional two tracks.

Worldwide sold out shows would be enough for most artists, but not Z-Trip. His career brims with myriad milestones, starting from the now legendary mixtape, Uneasy Listening, which the Phoenix, AZ native put together with Missouris notorious DJ P. Back in 2001, the idea of pitting classic rock tracks against hip-hop into a seamless mix that could find the Pharcyde rapping over the Eagles or Metallica grinding it out under the righteous bark of Midnight Oil was unheard of. But instead of hating it as expected, enraptured fans disseminated the initial run of only 1000 CDs across the internet. By years end, Uneasy Listening had made Z-Trip a burgeoning DJ star. It went on to receive critical acclaim and helped propel Z-Trip to national attention in 2002. It made album of the year lists in Spin, Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly, Wired and XLR8R. More importantly, it also inadvertently created an entirely new genre of music.
Then, on top of being a world-class DJ, Z-Trip established himself as a formidable producer and his major label debut in 2005, Shifting Gears, was given 4 stars by Rolling Stone, and featured appearances from many of Z-Trip’s friends: Chuck D, Chester Bennington of Linkin Park, Murs and Soup of Jurassic 5. It spawned numerous Top 10 singles in the US and abroad.

A lifelong political activist, Z-Trip was a strong supporter of the Barak Obamas successful campaign to become the President of the United States and released Party For Change and Victory Lap in 2009. Both exceeded 500,000 downloads and favorably reviewed by Wired, Urb, BPM, and XLR8R to name a few. Z-Trip’s longtime friend and collaborator Shepard Fairey supplied the art.

After 14 months of sold-out shows at his Friday night headlining residency at Rain inside The Palms, Las Vegas, Z-Trip is taking a rest from his crowd-thrilling stint, Z-Trips Revolution. Upon displaying his genre bending skills and sharing his stage with many A-level guests including Three 6 Mafia, Common, Rev Run, Too Short, and De La Soul, Z-Trip is taking a rest from stage to focus on his next chapter of recorded music.

Glenn Burke’s journey through baseball began and ended in Oakland, California. His sports career had many stops along the way, starting as a multi-sport star at Berkeley High School, followed by a brief stint at the University of Nevada, Reno as a prized basketball recruit, and then moving into professional baseball with the Los Angeles Dodgers, being hailed by one coach as “the next Willie Mays.”

Early in his career, Burke felt he had to hide his true self from his teammates.  Later, when he began to reveal glimpses into his sexuality the baseball establishment began to close him out.  Out. The Glenn Burke Story, a one-hour documentary produced by Comcast SportsNet Bay Area, tells the dramatic tale of Burke’s legacy as the first openly homosexual Major League Baseball player.  From his Major League debut in 1976 and starting Game One of the 1977 World Series for the Dodgers to subsequently being traded to the Oakland Athletics the next season, and then walking away in 1980 from the game that he deeply loved, Comcast SportsNet follows one of baseball’s most dramatic arcs.

Many of Burke’s teammates were aware of his homosexuality during his playing career, as were members of management. And many of those teammates believe that his sexuality – and the reaction it provoked – led to the premature derailment of his baseball career.

Out. The Glenn Burke Story tells the tumultuous story of the wedge that was driven between Burke and the Los Angeles management, the ensuing similar situation in Oakland that led to Burke’s abrupt retirement, and the hero’s welcome that Burke received in San Francisco’s Castro District after he left professional baseball.

Comcast SportsNet’s narrative follows Burke through his public announcement of his homosexuality in a 1982 Inside Sports magazine article (‘The Double Life of a Gay Dodger’) and on The Today Show with Bryant Gumbel, to his subsequent downward spiral to drugs, prison, and eventually living on the same San Francisco streets where he was once hailed as an icon.

Burke’s story took on another level of tragedy when he was diagnosed with AIDS in 1994.  Yet at the end of his life, the game that he claimed abandoned him so many years before reached out to one of its own. The A’s found Burke and provided him with constant support in his final months, as did some of his former teammates.

Glenn Burke passed away on May 30, 1995 at the age of 42 of AIDS-related complications.

Out. The Glenn Burke Story documents the extent of Burke’s courage, strife and friendship throughout his life, and the compassion and callousness of the sport of baseball.  The program weaves together insights from Burke’s teammates and friends, including Dusty Baker, Davey Lopes, Sports Agent Abdul-Jalil, Reggie Smith, Rick Monday, Manny Mota, Rickey Henderson, Claudell Washington, Mike Norris, Shooty Babitt, Tito Fuentes, and former Major Leaguer and gay rights activist Billy Bean. REVIEWS ON “OUT. THE GLENN BURKE STORY”
Pop Matters.com – ‘Out. The Glenn Burke Story’: That Macho Thing
By Cynthia Fuchs, PopMatters Film and TV Editor, December 1, 2010

“You were concerned of being stereotyped or typecast, that to know him must mean that you’re one. So you kept your distance.” A former Dodgers outfielder and coach, Reggie Smith remembers Glenn Burke as a player and friend. But still, he “kept his distance,” as Smith puts it, because Burke was out.

Smith’s concern was typical during the 1970s, when Burke played for the Dodgers, a time recounted in Out. The Glenn Burke Story. The documentary, produced by Doug Harris and Sean Madison, re-airs 1 December on Comcast SportsNet Bay Area, and is available as well on DirecTV’s sports pack channel 696 and Dish Network’s multi-sports package channel 419. It tells a story that is remarkable for a number of reasons, not least being Burke’s courage and determination: to this day, he remains the only Major League Baseball player to come out during his professional career.

The only one.

Out makes clear that Burke’s decision to come out was costly: as teammates struggled with their own feelings (Smith: “At that time, we were a little homophobic about people that were gay”), management was less ambivalent. The Dodgers dealt him to the As in 1977, where manager Billy Martin notoriously called him a “faggot” in front of his teammates. That same year, the A’s sent him down to the minors. Burke retired then, at age 27, despite good stats and an unfinished career.

As the film remembers, Burke didn’t talk about the trade or his retirement until 1982, in an interview with Inside Sports magazine (“The Double Life of a Gay Dodger”) and then an interview with Bryant Gumble on Today. The film includes a clip, with Gumble asking, “Were you traded from the Dodgers to the A’s because you were gay?” Burke shifts in his seat, tries not to answer, and then, prodded again (“What do you think?”), he nods, “Yeah.”

Out is compelling not only because of Burke’s story, but also because it is still such a difficult story to tell. The images of Burke, once a basketball and baseball star at Berkeley High School, are culled from archival game footage and stills (as well as headlines and baseball cards), and the narrative is structured mostly through new interviews with former teammates, associates, and Burke’s sisters. Repeatedly, the film offers nearly abstract shots of fences, the camera panning low or peering through chain-link obstructions. Sometimes the fences show blurred traffic behind them, sometimes road signs or baseball facilities, and sometimes they’re adorned with a photo of Burke, flapping in a breeze. Always, the fences serve as poignant, ominous emblems of his experience, ever outside.

The scanty information on his post-MLB life isn’t helped by the fact that Burke died of AIDS at 42, following a broken leg (when he was hit by a car in the Castro), drug use, jail time, and homelessness. And, if the film doesn’t narrate the point specifically, it does reveal in interviews the raced split in his life: the majority of his MLB teammates here are black, while his post-professional associates, say, softball teammates he met in San Francisco, are white.

The film’s visual structure—rudimentary, sometimes awkward—is likely dictated by a lack of available images. But it also makes a compelling point regarding the agonizing, persistent invisibility of gay athletes in the MLB (and the NFL and the NBA: in each professional league, players only come out after they’ve retired). How is it, the film asks implicitly, that homophobia can remain so standard in 2010?

Explanations are familiar. In the ‘70s, Oakland A’s right fielder Claudell Washington says, “Being ballplayers, we all had that macho thing going on.” Dusty Baker notes that he considered Burke a friend, but recalls, “Some of the guys on the team, especially some of the Latin guys, would act funny in the shower.” Pondering Burke’s fate in 1977, Davy Lopes observes, “If everybody knows the story, I think, there were other reasons why he was traded.” Smith adds, “I certainly didn’t want to accuse him of that, because one thing’s for sure, at that time period, it was a kiss of death for a ballplayer. He would’ve been excused from the game, so to say.”

So to say. Such lack of language shapes Out. Interview subjects share stories of their suspicions or their sympathies, mostly by innuendo: Washington remembers, “Glenn had some guys picking him up in pink Cadillacs” and Oakland Athletics infielder Shooty Babitt reports, “He had a red jock.” Smith says he wondered when he heard Burke “cooing” on a phone call with a man (“I didn’t know if this person had put a woman on the phone, I didn’t know what was going on”). Not everyone is so elusive. Abdul-Jalil al-Hakim remembers a story Burke told in his autobiography, Out at Home: The Glenn Burke Story, when Dodgers management offered him $75,000 to get married. The story is that Burke responded with a question: “I guess you mean to a woman.” Jalil adds, “Glenn took exception to that, refused to do it, and openly dated Tommy Lasorda’s son.”

It’s a funny story, and telling. As the film goes on to underscore Lasorda’s terrible homophobia (he insisted even after his son Spunky’s death that he was not gay), it also marks this moment of resistance as a point of no return for Burke. He lost his job and a certain, important sense of achievement, even as he found another sort of community in San Francisco. Billy Bean, an MLB player who came out after he retired, in 1999 (and is the only other player to be out at all), notes the fear that defines “male team sports.” He also makes clear the price Burke paid. “The closet hurts people forever,” Bean says now. Being forced to leave the game “because you don’t feel like you belong there when you’ve proven that you do, is damaging. And it affects everything.”

As U.S. official bodies rethink Don’t Ask Don’t Tell and gay marriage, individual bodies, bodies living real lives, are still feeling the effects of oppression, prejudice, and fear. Glenn Burke’s story helps to expose those effects.

AOL Fan House – Glenn Burke, First Openly Gay MLB Player, Well-Portrayed in Documentary
By Milton Kent, National Reporter, December 1, 2010

The professional life of a general manager of a regional sports channel is likely a quiet one, bordering on being nondescript. Basically, you welcome in programming that is already made available to you through corporate means, like games or infomercials or syndicated shows. Or you hire reporters and producers to air about three or so hours of daily news. Nothing exciting to see or do there. And then, there are execs like Ted Griggs, the vice president and general manager of Comcast SportsNet Bay Area. Griggs, who runs the San Francisco Bay Area channel, gave the green light to a superb documentary, “Out: The Glenn Burke Story,” that airs on the channel Thursday at midnight ET (or 9 p.m. Wednesday PT).

“Out” chronicles the life of Burke, who played for the Dodgers and the A’s in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Burke is presumed to be the first openly gay Major League Baseball player, and the hour-long film deals with Burke’s struggles in aching and painstaking detail, with haunting interviews from noted former teammates like Dusty Baker, Reggie Smith, Davey Lopes and Claudell Washington.

Filmmakers Doug Harris and Sean Maddison, both Bay Area natives, brilliantly use the words of Burke’s friends and family, as well as snippets of interviews with Burke conducted a year before his 1995 death of complications from AIDS, to tell his story. Included in the piece is a segment of his groundbreaking talk with then-Today Show anchor Bryant Gumbel, who interviewed the outfielder after Burke revealed his status in a 1982 story in the now-defunct Inside Sports magazine.

To the lasting credit of Griggs, Harris and Maddison, Burke is portrayed sympathetically, but not as a martyr; a subtle distinction, to be sure, but an important one, and one that raises “Out” from the status of a talking-head movie to an Emmy-quality film worthy of national distribution on Comcast’s outlets.

As it is, viewers outside Northern California can find Comcast SportsNet Bay Area on Direct TV at channel 696 and on Dish Network at channel 419. Comcast Sports Group, part of the NBC Sports Group, consists of 14 local networks that deliver 2,400 sporting events annually and breaking news and analysis to more than 50 million cable and satellite homes.  Comcast Sports Group’s sports networks are: Comcast SportsNet Bay Area, Comcast SportsNet California, Comcast SportsNet Chicago, Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic, Comcast SportsNet New England, Comcast SportsNet Northwest, Comcast SportsNet Philadelphia, SNY, The Mtn. – Mountain West Sports Network, CSS and Comcast Sports Southwest.  Comcast Sports Group also manages NECN (New England Cable News), the nation’s largest regional news network, and The Comcast Network, based in Philadelphia and Washington, which delivers community-oriented programming.  For more information, see ComcastSportsNet.com.

Excerpts from Out. The Glenn Burke Story:

Abdul-Jalil al-Hakim (Childhood friend and sports agent):
On Burke’s homosexuality and the homophobia in Major League Baseball:  “It was uncompromising on both ends.  Glenn was comfortable with who he was. Baseball was not comfortable with who he was.”

Claudell Washington:
On Oakland Athletics manager Billy Martin introducing Burke to his new teammates in spring training:  “He was introducing all the players and then he got to Glenn and said, ‘Oh, by the way, this is Glenn Burke and he’s a faggot.’”

Davey Lopes:
On Burke’s trade to the A’s:  “You don’t break up, disrupt a team going as well as it was going to make changes.  I didn’t feel it was going to make us a better ball club.  Billy North was not going to make us, at that time, any better of a ballclub.  Probably not the real reason why things happened.”

Dusty Baker:
On the rumors of Burke’s sexual preference and his trade to the A’s:  “I think the Dodgers knew; I think that’s why they traded Glenn.”

Reggie Smith:
On the suspicions on Burke’s sexuality:  “I certainly didn’t want to accuse him of that, because one thing’s for sure – at that time period, it was a kiss of death for a ballplayer.  He would’ve been excused from the game, so to say.”

Vincent Trahan (Berkeley High School classmate):
On Dodger management and their suspicions:  “Al Campanis and Walter O’Malley had called him into the office and offered him $75,000 to get married.  And Glenn, being his comic self, said, ‘I guess you mean to a woman?’”

On the Dodgers’ controversial trade of Burke to the A’s:  “He was hurt because they traded him not for his baseball ability but for his life choice.”

Lyle Spencer (MLB.com, former Los Angeles Dodgers beat writer):
On the reaction of Burke’s teammates the day he was traded:  “I was shocked that he was traded… I walked into the clubhouse…and guys were visibly distraught over the trade, and that told me that my sense of how important he was to them internally was accurate.  I even remember a few players crying when they found out about it at their lockers, which is stunning.”

The 4th Annual NFL All-Pro Marshawn Lynch’s “Fam1ly F1rst Football Camp” will be held July 7-10, 2011 at Oakland Tech High School and Leon Powe’s “Fresh Start Oakland- Powe Folk’s Basketball Camp” will be held August 19-21, 2011 at Merritt College in Oakland.

These Superstars along with NFL Hall of Famer Jerry Rice, Josh Johnson (QB Tampa Bay), Kirk Morrison Nnamdi Asomugha (Raiders), Raiders quarterback Jason Campbell, receivers Louis Murphy and Darius Heyward-Bey, Langston Walker (OT Raiders), Javid Best (RD Detroit Lions), Terrell Roberts (DB Oregon State/Cincinnati Bengals), Lamont Thompson (DB Washington State/Tennessee Titans), Clarence Martin (DB Fresno State/Angeles Rams), Julian Jenkins (DL Stanford/Tampa Bay Buccaneers), Courtney Anderson of the Raiders, and many national celebrities will hosts these events.

These camps are an integral part of a continuing effort to reach and offer alternatives to the under served youth of color in the Oakland- Northern California region to combat some of the maladies that afflict and compromise these youth.

Next is a brief note about the North Oakland Gang Injunction that was recently passed at the behest of ousted former Oakland City Attorney John Russo. This “civil” lawsuit imposes criminal restrictions on uncharged, unnamed, unknown youth of color whom only alleged “future” crime would be that they live in a certain area of Oakland. If this gang injunction were in place when Marshawn, Leon and Josh were kids, they would be classified as “Gang Members” today just because they live in a certain neighborhood and “know” each other. This “criminal activity” of living in a certain area is intolerable.

A&MWF Founder al-Hakim, Marshawn Lynch and Leon Powe to Help Poor, Under Served Youth

The recent Oakland Gang Injunction passed because City Attorney John Russo had the support of the ACLU whom has mobilized organizers to support, not fight it, to the peril of this North Oakland Community!

It has been established through research that this is nothing but another tool for developers to continue exercising gentrification of the Black Community unopposed because of the apathy and lack of leadership in defending the rights of the uncharged and unknown youth! Where is the National Action Network, NAACP, CORE, Rainbow Coalition, or any other national group that alleges to stand for Civil Rights when these youth are being trapped and “Okey Doaked” by the defenders of the public trust?

Every defendant “served”, and I use that term without any credibility under the legal process, with the unconstitutional injunction that has an attorney has been dropped from the matter! But those that were unrepresented were “convicted” in a civil proceeding with criminal implications because they do not have legal representation provided as in a criminal matter! If just one defaults, the system will entrap the rest of the youth population for ever.

Conveniently these liberal civil rights organizations will not represent theses people while filing an Amicus Brief yet venturing into the community with liberal organizers that will benefit from the demise of the youth punished by the injunction to advocate and pre-sell it’s inevitability and lobby for it’s acceptance as a needed measure to fight crime.

Forget about the “double jeopardy” that these youth face in a civil/criminal legal web cast by a deposed City Attorney whom has fabricated and planted that fabricated evidence in a case file, gave the case file to the defendants for nearly a year, and gave the case file to a judge for trial without notifying the court!

A&MWF founder Abdul-Jalil al-Hakim has mobilized attorney’s to represent poor, under served youth and secured ALL-Americans, NFL All-Pro, NBA World Champions, North Oakland residents, Santa Fe Elementary, Oakland Tech High School and U. C. Berkeley classmates Marshawn Lynch and Leon Powe along with several native Oakland celebrities to join national celebrities in this fight! Through the collaboration of the individuals, Powe’s “Fresh Start Oakland” August 19-21, 2011 at Merritt College in Oakland, Lynch’s “Fam1ly F1rst” July 7-10, 2011 at Oakland Tech High School, the Aaron & Margaret Wallace Foundation, and others, we will provide the much needed alternatives to these profiled youth to succeed in life and not be eliminated from it because some developers want their families property and them out the neighborhood.

REVIEWS ON “OUT. THE GLENN BURKE STORY”
Pop Matters.com – ‘Out. The Glenn Burke Story’: That Macho Thing

But still, he “kept his distance,” as Smith puts it, because Burke was out.

Billy Bean:
On dealing with discrimination:  “The closet hurts people – forever.  Everyone’s career ends, but to do it because you don’t feel you belong there when you’ve proven that you do is damaging.  And it affects everything, and I’m sure that’s why Glenn swam in the waters of drugs and alcohol – to take away his frustration.”

Claudell Washington:
On hearing about Burke contracting AIDS:  “I was stunned at that time. A person that I’d known, loved, and respected had contracted an illness like that and was suffering.”

Lutha Davis (Sister):
On AIDS:  “A lot of people were scared because I think, at the time, you didn’t know whether you can just breathe on somebody and get AIDS or just touch them.”

Pamela Pitts (Oakland A’s Director of Baseball Administration):
On Burke’s reaction to hearing the A’s would help him:  “Glenn started to cry and said, ‘I’ve been told you’re going to help me. I can’t believe someone wants to help me.’”

On Burke’s death: “I do believe he was in a much better place.  His demons were gone.”

Ted Griggs, Vice President and General Manager, Comcast SportsNet Bay Area stated, “As an East Bay native, I knew all about Glenn Burke’s legendary athletic feats at Berkeley High.  I followed his career with the Dodgers and A’s throughout the late seventies, and watched and read with great interest when he came out on The Today Show with Bryant Gumbel and in Inside Sports Magazine.  I was saddened by his tragic death and thought at the time that his was a compelling story that should be told one day.  This documentary allows Glenn’s family, friends, and teammates to tell that story, and it is enhanced with the narration of Dave Morey, one of the most respected voices in Bay Area radio.”

Out.  The Glenn Burke Story is narrated by Morey, who was recently inducted into the Bay Area Radio Hall of Fame in the class of 2010 after 26 years as a morning host at KFOG and nearly 40 years in broadcasting.
